City of Irving Irving, TX

Census Address Verification Program

While Irving residents will not be asked to fill out their Census forms until March of next year, workers for the 2010 Census may soon be visiting residents.

“The primary goal of the census is to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place,” said Tom Mesenbourg, acting director of the U.S. Census Bureau. “Because the census is used for reapportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and the distribution of more than $300 billion in federal dollars every year to state and local governments, it’s essential to get this first step right.”

A complete and accurate address list is the cornerstone of a successful census. From April through mid-July, the Census Bureau will double-check address lists for every community across the country. In Irving, residents have been recruited and are being trained to update and verify census address lists.

These workers, who can be identified by the official Census Bureau badges they carry, will visit houses, apartment complexes and dormitories to verify address numbers. They also may inquire about secondary living quarters, which may be on a particular site. They will never ask for bank or social security information.

The information they collect is confidential and protected by law. The Census Bureau cannot share respondent’s answers with police, code enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, the Central Intelligence Agency, Welfare, Immigration or any other state, federal or local governmental agency. No court of law or law enforcement agency can find out a respondent’s answers. All Census Bureau employees—including temporary employees—take an oath for life to keep census information confidential.

Any violation of that oath is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and five years in prison.
