Fire exits are designed to provide continuous and unobstructed means of exiting a building.
An exiting system in any building may include:
- intervening aisles
- doorways
- gates
- corridors
- exterior exit balconies
- ramps
- stairways
- smoke proof enclosures
Required exit doors must not be locked or blocked when a building is occupied. Escape routes should be posted at work stations and updated when changes are made. Remind personnel to be aware of the fastest escape route from their location. A fire drill/walk through is a good idea.
All exiting requirements are described in the International Building Code and in the International Fire Code. If you have any questions about your exiting system, call Building Inspections at 972.721.2371 during regular business hours, or Fire Prevention at 972.721.3695.
