Program Overview
The City of Irving is the first municipality in Texas and the second in the U.S. to implement a computer reuse program in which city-owned computer equipment is donated to low- and moderate-income families and nonprofit organizations.
Irving initiated the program in April 2008 and the first of 25 computers were presented to six families and two nonprofit organizations.
City employees refurbish the computers by cleaning the hard drives, installing the operating system and software, and thoroughly cleaning the PCs and monitors prior to distribution.
Families recieving the computers are responsible for installing the equipment. Recipients also are encouraged to attend computer training classes offered by a variety of resources including the Irving Public Library and North Lake College. When the time comes to dispose of the equipment, recipients agree to properly discard it using the city's drop-off Electronic Recycling Program locations.
