Driving Tips for Rainy Days
Slick roads are caused by dust and oil buildups on the roadway due to a lack of precipitation. When it rains, rainwater mixes with dust and oil buildup causing the roads to be slick.
To Avoid Skidding:
- Drive slowly, especially on curves. Steer and brake lightly. To stop or slow down, brake gently by applying mild pressure to the brake pedal.
- If you begin to skid, ease your foot off the gas pedal and carefully steer in the direction you want the car to go.
- If you do not have anti-lock brakes, avoid slamming on the brakes or using the brakes at all.
To Avoid Hydroplaning:
- Hydroplaning occurs when water in front of our tires builds up faster than your car’s weight can push it out of the way.
- If hydroplaning, do not brake or turn suddenly because you will begin to skid. Ease off the gas pedal until the car slows and you can feel your tires meet the road again.
- If you must brake, do it gently with a light pumping actions.
- If you have anti-lock brakes, brake normally.
