Shunt Trip Devices on Elevators

Code application subject: state elevator code and ANSI code requirement for shunt-trip devices on elevators where shaft and elevator machine room are protected by automatic sprinkler systems.

The fire chief has ruled that shunt-trip devices installed on elevator systems that will kill all power to elevators prior to sprinkler activation could endanger fire fighters and impede fire fighting and rescue operations. Such shunt-trip devices are prohibited in irving and, if found, will be removed. Sprinkler heads will be removed from the top of shaft and elevator machine rooms on existing systems and omitted on new sprinkler systems.

Fire alarm detection, portable fire extinguishers and hose valves are required.
