The Fire Department provides fire, emergency rescue service (EMS), rescue, and hazardous material protection on a 24-hour basis to the residents of Irving. We strive to minimize the dangers to life and property from the hazards that can arise each day in our city by fire safety education, fire prevention inspections, investigations, fire control operations, and continuous training in the fields of EMS, hazardous materials, and rescue.

Free Smoke Alarms
Your Irving Fire Department installs free smoke alarms for qualified residents of the City of Irving. You must meet one of the following requirements to have a free smoke alarm installed. Please note that smoke alarms will not be installed in rental property
- You are a low income family.
- You are 62 years of age or older.
- One or more family members has a mobility impairment.
- You have other extenuating circumstances.
Smoke Alarm Application and Release Forms
Please fill out the forms completely. Mail or bring the forms to the Irving Fire Department Fire Administration Building, 845 W. Irving Blvd., Irving, Texas, 75060. Please do not take these forms to the fire stations. For questions, call (972) 721-3695. Thank you for your interest in fire safety.
If you already have smoke alarms, remember to test them each month by pushing the test button down until it sounds. Remember to change smoke alarm batteries when you change your clocks at Daylight Savings Time. If your smoke alarm is over 10 years old it should be replaced. BBQ Grill Safety
- Your Irving Fire Department wants to remind you to be safe this summer when using your BBQ Grill.
- Only use your grill outdoors, they generate a lot of Carbon Monoxide that is odorless, colorless, and tasteless and is very deadly.
- Place the grill or smoker at least 10 feet away from your home or any other combustible structure.
- In apartments no grill, smoker, or hibachi is allowed to be used within 10 feet of an apartment building or attached structure.
- Keep children and pets away from the grill or smoker.
- Keep your grill clean of excess grease.
- Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
- Never use gasoline to start a charcoal grill and don't add lighter fluid after the fire is started.
- Always let your coals cool before disposing of them in a metal container.
2003-2006: U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 7,900 home fires involving grills per year. These fires caused 10 civilian deaths and $80 million in direct property damages. In 2007, 18,600 patients went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. 81 percent of the grills in these fires were fueled by gas. 16 percent were fueled by charcoal or other solid fuel.
Fireworks
Leave fireworks to the professionals.
In 2007, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 9,800 injuries related to fireworks, and the State of Texas had 626 fires caused by fireworks resulting in $333,644 in losses. The City of Irving is under the 2003 International Fire Code which states "The possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks is prohibited." This applies throughout the city limits of Irving.
Your Irving Fire Department encourages you to "Leave the fireworks to the professionals" and enjoy the many professional fireworks displays in the DFW Metroplex. Irving's Firecracker Fourth will be on July 4th at Williams Square, 5221 N. O'Connor Road. For more information see the City of Irving main web page.
