"The Irving Police Department uses mailing list software in innovative ways, leading the Dallas-Fort Worth community in communications with peers, residents, and businesses. Many information technology users tend to ignore list servers, as the technology is not that new, predating the advent of the World Wide Web. However, list servers have become new and exciting at Irving due to the recognition that, while list servers were once the domain of UNIX administrators and research scientists, police in the field as well as a large population of residents can now use them. Email list servers allow communication with large groups of people, while eliminating the need for any of those involved to track all the members. In this light, the Irving Police Department has used Lyris List Manager to communicate with residents, businesses, and law enforcement peers quickly, efficiently, and cheaply. Irving has founded four inter-agency discussion lists, and has established two public groups for residents as well. "
