Texas Stadium Implosion Date Set for Morning of April 11
Preparatory efforts continue to progress as the city gets ready for the sunrise implosion of Texas Stadium this spring.
Implosion Preparation
Concrete has been removed from the lower seating bowl (the portion below the surface) and 95 percent of the concrete and metal will be recycled and made available for use on the reconstruction of the State Highway 183 and 114 interchange.
The lower bowl area is being filled with dirt from the excavation of the DART Orange Line construction project. Asbestos removal will be completed inside and outside the structure, followed by the removal of all building materials until only the structural concrete and steel remain.
Appropriate safety precautions are being taken in regard to surrounding structures. Engineers have determined that all structures are safe and will not be affected by the implosion. Contractors will measure the ground movement before, during and after the implosion to record results. On implosion day, the Police Department will help control traffic near the site. Traffic on area highways will be stopped for approximately 30 minutes and rights of way will be off limits.
Upon completion of the implosion, the remaining debris will be removed from the site, which will continue to be used by the Texas Department of Transportation as a staging area for several years during reconstruction of the adjacent highways.
After Texas Stadium
The site presents a rare opportunity for future development. The area is in the heart of the Metroplex and is surrounded by key highway infrastructure, and will provide easy access to the DART Orange Line, as well as to the DFW International and Love Field airports. Information about the future development of the property will be posted at www.crossroadsdfw.com as it becomes available. “We are excited about the great opportunity that will exist in Irving and how the community will benefit from future development,” said Mayor Herbert Gears.
