City Green-Lights Installation of New Red Light Cameras

The city has installed three new red light cameras to provide increased safety to motorists. Since the installation of red light cameras in Irving more than two years ago, there has been a 64 percent reduction of red light running accidents at the designated intersections.

New camera locations were selected following a lengthy safety study, to include:
  • State Highway 183 and Story Road
  • Irving Boulevard and Story Road
  • Interstate 635 and MacArthur Boulevard

Red light cameras capture actual video and photographs of drivers who run red lights. Offenders receive a notice of violation with a fine. The notices include color photos of the driver’s car with a close-up of the vehicle’s license plate. Offenders who request additional evidence have the option of viewing a video clip online or at City Hall.

In Irving, the car owner is responsible for the violation, which may not necessarily be the person who ran the red light. Violations cost $75 each. Since the offense is considered civil, not criminal, warrants cannot be issued for the arrest of offenders, nor can the offense be added to driving records of offenders.
