The city continues to take steps toward redeveloping South Irving with the demolition of the Villa Martinique Apartments, located at 418 S. MacArthur Blvd.

Excavation began Nov. 5, and is expected to be completed within 60 days with the lot cleared by the end of the year.

“This is the first of the substandard apartment complexes to be demolished,” said Mayor Herbert Gears. “The city is committed to its code enforcement efforts and does not tolerate unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. The people in this community will benefit from this property being redeveloped into something we can all be proud of.”

The 150-unit complex was vacated in September 2006 after it was determined that several of the buildings yielded unsafe and unsanitary living conditions.

In May, Olde Towne developer Delbert McDougal purchased the property with plans for redevelopment in the near future. Though not a part of the Olde Towne plan, the property will coincide with the project to help bring new businesses and people to South Irving.
