Construction on Irving’s new 270,000-square-foot convention center has moved into the above-ground phase with the installation of the first trusses. A city field operations employee is on-site daily to oversee the project.

The intersection of State Highway 114 and Northwest Highway is the site of this $133 million project, which will include a 50,000-square-foot, column-free exhibit hall, a 20,000-square-foot grand ballroom and 20, 1,000-square-foot conference rooms. The building has registered for LEED certification and will feature natural/untreated copper panels and cantilevered floors to create shade.

Securing development projects and economic growth are top of mind for Irving city officials including Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Maura Gast. “We want Irving to set the model for a vibrant economy,” said Gast. “And we recognize that significant public sector initiatives like the convention center greatly contribute to the business-friendly climate the City of Irving offers.”

Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau staff is soliciting business for the new center, which is expected to open late in 2010. Read more online at www.irvingconventioncenter.com.
