Improvements to Irving’s Curb Appeal Begin to Show Results

Much progress has been made regarding enhancements to Irving's gateways and corridors, following the adoption of the study by the City Council in February 2007. The goal is to enhance Irving’s visual image and identity by creating opportunities for entry gateways and “Welcome to Irving” entry signage.

Several projects are under way and scheduled for completion by the end of 2008. These include:

  • Construction of two entry gateway markers.
  • Installation of two “Welcome to Irving” entry signs.
  • Beautification on MacArthur Boulevard, from State Highway 183 to Rochelle Road.

The two entry gateways include an arched gateway structure with a bronze equine sculpture on MacArthur Boulevard, at Shady Grove Road and Weathered Street.

The Shady Grove Road project is part of a larger intersection enhancement project, which includes the movement of overhead utility lines underground, new monument signage for the businesses at the intersection, and landscape improvements on all four corners.

The two “Welcome to Irving” entry signs are targeted for MacArthur at Hunter Ferrell Road and Belt Line Road north of Hunter Ferrell Road.

In addition, the beautification of the MacArthur corridor is well under way. The pocket park at Grauwyler Road and the landscaping along the west side of MacArthur, from State Highway 183 to Rochelle Road, have been completed. Additional corridor improvements are in the planning stage for the southern part of MacArthur Boulevard.

These include new median pavers, new street lighting, new traffic signals, native grass plantings and intersection improvements at Shady Grove Road and Sixth Street.

The goal of the project is to improve the MacArthur corridor from Rock Island to Hunter Ferrell Road. The south MacArthur corridor enhancements will be finished in early 2009.
