A cleaner and improved aesthetic appearance for major thoroughfares is the reason behind the city’s enhanced corridor litter abatement initiative. The Parks and Recreation Department expanded the program to improve the appearance of primary city streets and corridors through regularly scheduled and systematic litter control.

“Our goal for this program is to provide a cleaner and nicer appearance for our residents, visitors and businesses,” said Al Johnson, park operations supervisor. “Through these efforts and with the help of active partnerships, we hope to make Irving a more vibrant community.”

Five full-time employees make up two litter teams that perform daily litter control. Areas addressed daily include:

  • Belt Line Road
  • Esters Road
  • Irving Boulevard/State Highway 356
  • MacArthur Boulevard
  • Northgate Drive
  • O’Connor Road
  • Rock Island Road
  • State Highway 183
  • Story Road

Other thoroughfares are addressed on a weekly basis. The corridor litter team also responds to various related issues, such as abandoned shopping carts on public rights-of-way.

The Parks and Recreation Department also will be working with other city departments, government agencies, homeowners associations, and other interested individuals and organizations, in an effort to enhance litter awareness and to search for methods of identifying and addressing root causes of litter.

In addition, residents can provide input on problem areas by calling the 24-hour litter hot line at (972) 721-5487. The number is monitored daily.
