Police Promote School Zone Safety in Irving

With driver distractions on the rise, the Irving Police Department is asking parents and guardians to remind children about pedestrian safety. Children should cross the road only at properly designated crosswalks near schools. It is dangerous to cross the road with children at unmarked, unattended locations. Following are additional pedestrian safety tips:

• Look left, right and left again before crossing the street, and keep looking and listening while crossing
• Obey crossing guards at all times
• Remove headphones when crossing the street
• Walk, do not run, when crossing the street
• Whenever possible, cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks

The City of Irving provides 76 crossing guards and staffs 55 intersections to assist children at crosswalks near schools. This program is budgeted through the Irving Police Department. For more information about the city's school crossing guard program, visit the Web page or call (972) 721-3553.
