Independence Day Weekend DWI Enforcement
The Irving Police Department will be conducting a DWI No-Refusal Operation over the Independence Day weekend — July 5-6.
The operation is in conjunction with the state's "Drink. Drive. Go to Jail." campaign. The department will have additional officers on duty with the primary purpose of locating and arresting impaired drivers. These officers will be patrolling throughout the city to ensure compliance through visibility and enforcement.
During this holiday weekend, the officers will be utilizing a no-refusal approach to DWI enforcement. When a person is arrested for DWI, they will be offered a blood test (no breath test will be offered). If anyone refuses to provide a blood sample, a judge will be present in order to authorize a warrant for a blood draw.
Also, in an effort to save lives and prevent roadway crashes over the extended Fourth of July weekend, the Texas Department of Transportation is introducing its Faces of Drunk Driving safety campaign to urge motorists to be smart and drive sober. Throughout the month of July, TxDOT will host Faces of Drunk Driving events across the state. Safety advocates, law enforcement and victims of drunken driving will share their stories in front of 1,170 Texas flags, representing the number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes in Texas in 2012. For more information about this campaign and to watch stories of those impacted by drunken driving please visit facesofdrunkdriving.com. Remember, "Drink. Drive. Go to Jail."
Please join the Irving Police Department in its efforts to ensure that Irving's streets and highways are safe for all to travel. If you see a driver or vehicle that needs police attention, and you or a passenger can do so safely, call 911 with the information.
