Neighborhood Resource Unit
The purpose of this three person unit is to work with residents, businesses, apartment communities, civic groups and social organizations of Irving to help people become aware of crime in their areas and ways to help the police department reduce it.
The unit does educational programs and crime prevention presentations along with acting as a liaison between these groups and the police department. The unit also does security surveys, coordinates the Neighborhood Crime Watch groups, Citizens Police Academy and Irving Citizens On Patrol (ICOP) program. The unit organizes summer programs utilizing the Neighborhood Contact Trailer (NCT) in different areas. The Neighborhood Contact trailer is used throughout the year and especially during the summer to talk to kids about drugs, gangs, stranger danger programs and any problems unique to the particular area (see photo below).
The unit works with apartment managers to keep them informed on new laws and leasing contracts regarding their tenants. Officers will set up meetings using Domestic Violence Investigators, Counselors, Battering Intervention, Alcoholics Anonymous and employment vocational assistance. The unit tries to provide as many programs as the citizens request and the department can successfully complete.
"NCT" is very beneficial as a mobile contact unit
