Self-Service Centers (Paper Only):

Curbside Recycling Program

Recyclables must be in blue recycling bags, which can be purchased at the City Hall Customer Service Desk.
  • Recycle only on designated recycling days. Call 972.721.2346 to inquire about curbside recycling schedule, or look at the Recycling Schedules maps.

  • Recyclables must be set out by 7 a.m. on recycling day.

  • Be sure to flatten all boxes (un-flattened boxes will be treated as trash).

  • Place recyclables at least three feet from the trash.

  • Set trash and recyclables away from sprinkler systems.

  • Bags cannot exceed 50 pounds.

  • All acceptable recyclable items may be placed together in the same blue bags.

  • Remove and discard plastic caps.

  • Drain and rinse bottles.

  • No hazardous materials containers will be collected in blue bags (i.e., flammables, paint, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, solvents, and motor oil).

Refused Items: Recycling crews will not pick up bags that contain items unacceptable for recycling. The bags will be left at the curb and marked with a green or orange tag explaining why the bag was left and how to correct the problem. After correcting the problem, please remove the tag and set the bag out the next recycling collection day.

Materials That Are Accepted At The Curb:
  • Aluminum and steel food cans; aerosol cans
  • Plastic food containers numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper
  • Corrugated cardboard (flattened and put under the recycling blue bag)
Plastics That Are Not Accepted At The Curb:
  • Plastic wrap
  • Plastic bags of any kind (except for the recycling blue bag in which recyclables are placed)
  • Bottles which have contained pesticides, motor oil, or other hazardous materials
Glass That Is Not Accepted At The Curb:
  • Light bulbs
  • Plate glass, auto glass, ceramics, etc.
  • Mirrors
What are the advantages of using Blue Bags?
  • Convenience: Placing bags on the curb for pickup is quicker and easier than dropping them off yourself.

  • Privacy: Blue bags offer privacy over plastic bins. The contents inside can only be viewed if standing closer than four feet to the bags.

Residents should only use blue bags for recycling.

Understanding the Recycling of Plastics

Irving now accepts plastic food containers No. 1 through No. 7 (except No. 6 - Styrofoam) in the curbside recycling program as well as at all recycling drop-off centers.

To identify plastic containers for recycling, look at the bottom of the plastic container. A recycling triangle can be seen with three chasing arrows and a number in the middle. All but No. 6 is recyclable. Plastic grocery store bags are acceptable only at the drop-off centers. Plastic containers that have contained pesticides or other hazardous materials, such as motor oil are
not accepted.
