The Big Read/The Big Bleed - On October 1, 2009, Water Utilities teamed up with Library Services and Parks and Building Services to sponsor a shared event that incorporated an emphasis on reading with the celebration of the works of Edgar Alan Poe and a blood drive, in honor of Poe's macabre style. Utilities employees pitched a "Big Top" tent under which was served food and beverage from a couple of fabulous, home-grown sponsors. Sonic donated over 300 of its best coneys and Frito Lay supplied over 600 bags of chips. The food was prepared and distributed by water utilities employees, who promoted and advertised the event that attracted about 500 people. The combined blood donations will be available to possibly as many as 150 local people and the emphasis on the works of Poe was a boost to literacy in the community. Water Utilities was please to be able to team up with other city employees to make this a highly successful event.
Food Drive - The City of Irving Water Utilities Department donated 86 pounds of groceries to Irving Cares in support of the December Holiday Food Drive 2009.
