Returning Materials

Library materials need to be returned on time. Materials may be returned at any Irving Public Library location. After-hours 24/7 book return windows are available at all library locations. Damaged materials should be returned and reported to an IPL Express Service point at South Irving Library, Valley Ranch Library or West Irving Library.

Late Materials

If materials are not returned on time, customers may not check out materials, use the public computers, place materials on hold, or renew library materials. Once the late materials are returned or charges are resolved, privileges are restored.

Renewing Materials

If items are not overdue or on hold for another customer, they may be renewed. DVDs/Blu-rays and all other materials may be renewed up to 3 times.Renew materials online with your library card and PIN on chat or call (972) 721-2580 for the automated renewal service available 24 hours a day.

Placing a Hold

If the item you want is not available at the library you are using, you may place a hold on the item. If the item is available at another branch, it will be sent to the branch of your choice (excluding East Library). If all copies are checked out, you will be placed on the holds list to receive a copy when one is available. A Regular card may have up to 20 holds at one time.

Holds may be placed on chat, by phone or using the library’s online catalog. The library will notify you when the item is ready to be picked up either by phone or via email. Materials that are ready for pickup are held for seven days. Customers with late materials or charges on their account cannot place any hold requests.

Replacing Library Cards

A valid photo ID must be shown and account information verified to obtain a replacement card.

Fines and Fees

The Irving Public Library does not charge fines for overdue materials. The library does charge for lost or damaged materials; charges may include a non-refundable processing fee up to $5. Cardholder accounts with charges more than 75 days past due may be referred to the library’s collection agency. Accounts sent to the collection agency are charged an $8.95 non-refundable collection fee, which the cardholder must pay to clear the account, even if the items are returned. Payments and Payment Plans

Payments are accepted at all library locations, online, or over the phone. Staff can accept credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and Discover) payments over the library’s Online Payment system. Monthly payment plans are available in order to allow a continued checkout and use of public computers. East Library and Learning Center is temporarily closed at the current time.

Library Refund Policy

No refunds will be issued for payments after 60 days. Refunds require the original payment receipt(s). Processing fees are non-refundable. Lost item(s) must be returned in good condition for refund. All library card fees are non-refundable.

Cardholder Responsibility

The registered cardholder is responsible for all materials borrowed on the card and agrees to abide by all library policies in effect. Call the library at (972) 721-2606 to promptly report a lost card or changes in address or phone information. The card is the property of the Irving Public Library.

Public Computer Use

Your library card and PIN are required to use a public computer. A customer is allowed to log on twice a day. Public computers cannot be used by customers with late materials or charges on their accounts. Computer Use Only cards are available. View the Computer and Internet Policy (PDF).

Digital Media Downloads

You can download free eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines, or stream movies and music 24/7 with your library card. For information about getting started, visit the Digital Downloads page.

Borrowing Books From Other Libraries

Irving residents with a full access card in good standing may request a book that Irving Public Library does not own through InterLibrary Loan. Requests are limited to books and articles. Books published within the last six months are not eligible. You can submit a limited number of requests online or call the library at (972) 721-2606. Residents of Irving may also request a TexShare card to borrow materials from other TexShare libraries in Texas. Your IPL card must be "full access" and in good standing for at least six months to qualify for a TexShare Card.
