Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) hosted its 2023 Trash-Off on April 1 at Trinity View Park, where 215 volunteers came together with the common goal of stopping litter from reaching the nearby Elm Fork of the Trinity River.
Following the cleanup, volunteers were treated to lunch. Members of the Nueva Vida Church cooked and served the lunch. City departments were instrumental in the success of this event, including Parks and Recreation, providing the location and logistic guidance; Solid Waste Services, providing roll-off containers and weighing the materials collected; and Communications, providing promotion and coverage of the event. Volunteers from Crisis Ministries of Irving accepted canned food donations from those in attendance and collected a total of 315 pounds for the food pantry. Those who donated food items received a KIB T-shirt.
KIB also offered a virtual “#IrvingTrashOff2023” where volunteers chose their own locations around the city and reported via social media.
The combined efforts of the in-person and remote events were:
- 229 volunteers
- 701 volunteer hours
- 1,230 pounds of trash collected
- 1,140 pounds of recyclables collected
