The hotspots program is going through changes this year, including a pause in lending this spring and an expansion to other branches later in 2024.
A temporary wind-down for lending hotspots begins Feb. 9, as the South Irving Library will no longer be accepting new hold requests for the popular devices. Existing hold requests will continue to be fulfilled through Tuesday, March 19, which is the last day they can be loaned. All devices should be returned to the South Irving Library by Wednesday, April 10, when services will be suspended.
Why the deadlines? The current hotspots program has been a grant-funded initiative that was guaranteed for two years, and it ends in early April. The next step is securing a new contract for wi-fi hotspot services for the next two years. Good news is the program will be expanding to include more hotspots that will supply West Irving and Valley Ranch customers.
While the exact date that the hotspots program will resume is currently not known, it is anticipated that the program could restart this spring or early summer.
