[ARCHIVED] Discover the TexShare Card

TexShare Card

Maybe you've heard about Interlibrary Loan, our service for obtaining books that the Irving Public Library doesn't own.  But there is another lending service we offer for the times when you just can't wait for a book to arrive through the mail.

Imagine having borrowing privileges at UTA, SMU, University of Dallas, or the public libraries of Dallas, Grand Prairie or Plano, all without paying a non-resident charge.  Hundreds of libraries and millions of books across the state are available to you for free with the TexShare Card

Requesting a TexShare Card @ IPL

You can pick up a TexShare card at the checkout desk of any Irving Public Library, provided you meet the following conditions:

  • You are a resident of Irving and 18 years of age or older.
  • You have had a valid Irving Public Library card for at least six months. Non-resident cards, corporate cards, computer access cards, student cards, and restricted-use cards are not acceptable.
  • You present acceptable identification in person. Along with issuing your TexShare card, we also renew your IPL card for 12 months.
  • Your borrower account is in good standing with no overdue materials and no outstanding charges for lost or damaged materials.
  • Your account has been in good standing for the previous six months.
  • You agree to abide by the rules, policies, and procedures of the TexShare card program and its participating libraries.

Using a TexShare Card

Before getting in the car, be sure to look up the library you want to visit in the Find-a-Library search page to make sure they accept the card. There are a few notable examples of libraries in the state that do not participate, including Arlington Public Library. When reading the library's information page through the search page, click on the Card Lending Policies link to read more about the library's rules that apply to using a TexShare card.  Each library has slightly different lending policies, and these often cover topics including:

  • Limiting the number of items checked out.
  • Limiting the loan period and number of renewals
  • Additional required forms of ID for lending
  • Fines and charges for lost items
  • Items ineligible for borrowing

As an example, here's the link to Dallas Public Library's lending policies

Final Word

The goal of the TexShare Card program is to open up libraries across Texas to the many people who reside here. It's a program built on trust and responsibility. Failure to promptly return materials borrowed with a TexShare card and/or pay any charges imposed by a lending library may result in suspension or denial of your borrowing privileges at the Irving Public Library and/or your account being turned over to the library’s collection agency.
