The City of Irving received the Silver Certification in integrated Stormwater Management (iSWM) from the North Central Texas Council of Governments. Irving is among six North Texas cities to receive the silver designation for its efforts in protecting residential and commercial developments downstream from new or redeveloped projects.
Development or redevelopment projects decrease the amount of natural space (grass or open fields) in a city. This results in more runoff in streets and drainage systems, which increases the chance of pollutants to flow into the city’s waterways.
For about 18 months, city leaders, management and staff have worked to implement stronger drainage standards for developers and contractors, which will protect existing properties from flooding and erosion damage. The drainage standards reflect the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible and efficient development, water quality and flood protection.
