National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)

NaNoWriMo 2018

This year, adults can celebrate National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) at the West Irving Library. Budding teen writers can attend events at Valley Ranch Library. Aspiring authors from the region – not to mention all over the world—will join in a race against the clock starting Nov. 1 to write their own 50,000 word novel—approximately 175 pages—by 11:59 p.m. Nov. 30. NaNoWriMo’s fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to authorship has grown massively since its inception in 1999. Meet with fellow writers throughout the month for support and feedback at library-sponsored write-in events.

“This is a fun and inventive way to support writing as a profession as well as the future of libraries,” said West Irving librarian Linda Opella. “I’m glad to be coordinating this year’s event and can’t wait to see how it all turns out!”

Those who complete their novels and upload them to the website by the deadline will be featured on NaNoWriMo’s Winner’s Page and receive handsome certificates and web badges. From there, the possibilities are endless. Over 250 novels written during National Novel Writing Month have been released by traditional publishing houses, including Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants, Marissa Meyer’s Cinder and Julie Murphy’s Side Effects May Vary. Hundreds of other works have found homes at smaller presses. Many more have been self-published, and others have been printed in novelists’ native languages. For more information, visit
