In the cold wintertime hustle and bustle in the Valley Ranch area of town last year, a sweet woman came in to sign up for a new library card. The card was not for her, but for her husband who had spent years purchasing books and had never thought to use his local library. She wanted to get him the card as a Christmas present, and also as a cost-savings measure.
You see, at the time, Mr. Hanson was seventy-one years young, and it was time for the two retirees to trim expenses. Since library policies would not allow Mrs. Hanson to register her husband for a card, staff member Stefanie D. came up with a creative solution. She suggested that Mrs. Hanson slip a Library Card information brochure into her husband’s stocking with a cute bow, then return with him after the holidays. Mrs. Hanson did exactly as suggested.
On Dec. 26, the two returned to register for Mr. Hanson’s first ever Irving Public Library card. He was amazed at the selection and the simple process for obtaining the card. It was over so fast, he could hardly believe his eyes.
In fact, he wondered why he hadn’t done it sooner. He was having so much fun that when he was jokingly offered the “Arthur’s First Card” sticker, he took it and wore it proudly while posing for pictures with Valley Ranch Library staff members. He had such a great time that day, and we expect many more now that he is a member of the Irving Public Library System.
During the course of 2018, over 16,200 borrower registrations were performed, many of them were first time cards. This holiday season, giving the gift of reading is easy. Those who live in Irving can receive their first library card for free. Those who do not live in Irving can pay $40 for a card with the ability to check out books, movies, music and more from our physical collections and from our digital services!
After the presents have been opened, but while the hot cocoa is still warm, take a moment to sit down with the reader in your life who doesn't have a card with us and visit https://www.cityofirving.org/2424/New-Library-Card to pre-register for an Irving library card online.* It will be so much more worthwhile than watching “A Christmas Story” or “It’s a Wonderful Life” for the billionth time, and the afternoon nap can wait a few more minutes, right? Like the Hansons, stop by in the days following Christmas to present the ID requirements and pick up the card that pays you back in dividends!

*This process is for first-time registrants. For those who have had an Irving library card previously, at any time or Irving location, we ask that the cardholder speak with a library staff member first to determine eligibility.
