Safety Tips for Nighttime Dog Walking

The daylight is shorter but you can still enjoy an evening stroll through the neighborhood with your beloved pet. A nighttime walk also is a good bonding experience for you, your pet and the “great outdoors.” Follow these safety tips to ensure you and your dog enjoy an evening walk.

  • Consider LED or reflective gear: On your walk consider using small dog-safe LED light pendants to put on your dog’s collar or leash. You also can find collars that have LED material embedded in them. These will ensure that your dog is visible from a distance in the dark. Additionally, you can use leashes, collars or vests with reflective material.
  • Follow a familiar route: When walking your dog, take a familiar route that is well lit and avoids busy streets.
  • Be mindful of surroundings: During your evening walk it is important to keep an eye out for any off-leash pets or nocturnal animals. If you see another animal before your pet, you can direct your dog’s attention away and safely continue your walk.
  • Bring a flashlight: A small handheld flashlight can be helpful to see things on the ground that can blend in with the darkness. If you need to keep your hands free, consider using a headlamp.
  • Consider your own clothing: You need to be visible just like your pet. Avoid dark clothing and wear reflective material or LED items.
