On Jan. 6, a 4-inch water pipe separated from an 18-inch water main at Belt Line Road and Walnut Hill Lane, causing a major water line break. The failure also blew apart a manhole nearby. There was a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to maintain water service and keep pressure at safe levels in the system.
Irving Water Utilities detected the failure almost immediately, and staff at the Valley View facility controlled the system remotely to maintain the city's water pressure. Meanwhile, crews on-site located nearby valves and slowly turned off each one to help prevent more failures. The repair took 18 hours from detection to cleanup.
