North Texas Teen Book Festival celebrates its fifth year anniversary with a book blast like none other March 23. At the Festival, over 13,000 fans will enjoy a full day of free author panels, activities and keynote talks with over 70 bestselling and debut authors. Here are some of the highlights from the newly released event schedule:
Keynotes: At 9 a.m. hear from Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist of “Smile” and “Drama” Raina Telgemeier. At 3 p.m. see Tomi Adeyemi, whose book “Children of Blood and Bone” has spent an entire year on the New York Times Children’s Bestseller list, and Tahereh Mafi whose work “A Very Large Expanse of Sea” about a Muslim teen’s story post 9/11 has just been optioned by Levantine Films, co-headline the Young Adult closing conversation.
Over forty panels will feature authors of works that display an array of diverse characters and topics found in Young Adult and Middle Grade works. Some of the must-see panels include:
10 a.m., Angie Thomas, author of the “The Hate U Give,” and Elizabeth Acevedo, Ellen Hagan, Susan Kuklin, Nic Stone, and Renée Watson will speak on the power of finding one’s voice through literature.
Noon, Julie Murphy, Texas author of “Dumplin’” whose 2018 adaptation on Netflix starred Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald, along with writers Ellen Hagan, Reneé Watson and Alicia D. Williams will discuss how all bodies are beautiful in their books.
1 p.m. Real-life counselors will moderate the Mental Health Matters panels featuring an entire panel of award-winning writers: Adib Khorram, Erika L. Sánchez, John Corey Whaley and Jeff Zentner
Activities and Unique Events:
Publisher Activities: Publishers get in the game too! Come see HarperCollins reps from Epic Reads give a behind the scenes peek at what life is like for professional book nerds at 10 a.m. Stop by the publishers’ booths for swag, giveaways and more! Exclusive author promotional events are for teens only.
11 a.m. Middle-Grade Madness is arguably one of the most interactive experiences of the day with participants teaming up with 16 popular middle-grade authors to play truth or dare and more bookish shenanigans.
1:30 p.m., Popular Booktubers (young book reviewers who vlog on YouTube) Whitney Atkinson, Hannah Azerang, Ashley Nguyen, Naya Perkins, Natasha Polis, Christine Riccio talk about their channels and answer fan questions.
Author Signings: From 3:30 to 5 p.m. the NTTBF19 authors sign their works. The three Keynote authors, Angie Thomas and Becky Albertalli require tickets which may be picked up at 8 a.m. outside the Irving Convention Center Box Office. Look for stickers indicating pre-signed stock found in the Barnes and Noble bookstore on-site.
