It's a Cool Summer (for Teens)

Put away those study materials and dive into the books you love with our 2019 Summer Reading Challenge: A Universe of Stories. Get lost in pages, plots and characters that will pull you into worlds unseen, down roads untraveled and into skies full of stars. And what perfect timing, considering that the love/hate series finale of GOT may/may not have left you with the summer blues. At your local library, the shelves are filled with many more stories that are waiting to be told, any of which are sure to reward you. Teens in grades 6-12 who read five hours a week can earn a prize. They are even eligible to enter a drawing for an iPad Mini!

In addition to reading, teens are encouraged to attend our free Summer Reading Challenge programs. Any of which, you will receive a credit for one hour of reading. Here’s what’s going on in June:

Intergalactic Slime | Ages 10+
4:30 p.m. June 5 | East Branch Library, 440 S. Nursery Road
Learn how to make two different types of slime. For ages 10 and up.

Star Wars Program | Grades 6-12
2 p.m. June 6 | West Irving Library Meeting Room, 4444 W. Rochelle Road
Are you one with the force? Best friends with Chewbacca? Kick off the summer with us and come enjoy pizza, snacks, Star Wars-themed crafts and a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

Make Your Own Planet | Grades 6-12
5:30 p.m. June 6 | Valley Ranch Library Meeting Room, 401 Cimarron Trail
Build your own custom planet! Materials including paint and glitter are provided. Grades 6-12.

High Voltage Teen Book Club | Grades 6-12
2 p.m. June 8 | South Irving Library Teen Zone, 601 Schulze Dr.
Join us for a themed craft and discussion for this month's selection of The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon.

Valley Ranch Anime Club: Summer Wars | Grades 6-12
4 p.m. June 8 | Valley Ranch Library Meeting Room, 401 Cimarron Trail
The future of the world is at stake when a video game-playing virus threatens to wipe out the planet. Make candy sushi as you watch our heroes dive into cyberspace to save the world from (almost) certain doom!

DIY Geek Chic, Lumi Solar Printing | Grades 6-12
2 p.m. June 10 | South Irving Library Program Room, 601 Schulze Dr.
Join us for a special Lumi screen printing session. We'll use the power of the sun to create one of a kind screen printed pencil bags.

The Perot Tech Truck presents Rocket Science | Ages 10+
4:30 p.m. June 12 | East Branch Library Program Room, 440 S. Nursery Road
Let the Perot Museum come to you! This week it's all Rocket Science with staff and tools courtesy of the Perot Tech Truck. For ages 10 and up.

Galaxy in a Jar | Grades 6-12
5:30 p.m. June 13 | Valley Ranch Library Meeting Room, 401 Cimarron Trail
Hold the universe in your hand by creating a galaxy jar. Dream up a beautiful starry design you'll enjoy displaying. Materials provided. Grades 6-12.

Science & More, Star Wars Edition | Grades 6-12
4:30 p.m. June 17 | South Irving Library Program Room, 601 Schulze Dr.
Explore science from a galaxy far, far away as we stir up Jabba the Hut slime, race gliding land-speeders, and duel with LED lightsabers.

Moon Rock Painting | Ages 10+
4:30 p.m. June 19 | East Branch Library Program Room, 440 S. Nursery Road
Paint your own one of a kind “moon rock.” Ages 10 and up.

DIY Moon Rocks | Grades 6-12
2 p.m. June 20 | West Irving Library Meeting Room, 4444 W. Rochelle Road
Come join the run rock painting craze and make your own moon and galaxy rocks.

Marble Planets | Grades 6-12
5:30 p.m. June 20 | Valley Ranch Library Meeting Room, 401 Cimarron Trail
Make funky-looking planets with marbling techniques. Materials provided. Grades 6-12.

Create Amazing Paper Airplanes | 10+
4:30 p.m. June 26 | East Branch Library Program Room, 440 S. Nursery Road
Learn how to fold a variety of paper airplanes and other flying contraptions. For ages 10 and up.

Moon Rocks | Grades 6-12
5:30 p.m. June 27 | Valley Ranch Library Meeting Room, 401 Cimarron Trail
Mine for sparkling moon rocks! Materials provided. Grades 6-12.
