Library Strategic Plan

Irving Public Library joins the nationwide literacy movement to encourage kids, especially boys, to become a cut above the rest in regards to reading and learning, by providing free books to enjoy at local barbershops. It is a new Read While You Wait initiative, titled 3B – Boys, Books and Barbershops – is a library partnership with the Irving Police Department, Irving Municipal Courts, and local businesses to supply reading opportunities and provide positive role models to improve the futures of Irving’s youth. Join us for the program launch at the:

3B: Look Sharp & Be Smart Pizza Party
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 3, 1Nice Cut Barbershop, 835 N. Belt Line Road
Did someone say PIZZA, BOOKS...and back-to-school HAIR CUTS? Boys can enter drawings for free hair cuts and all children attending can snack on pizza and take home a free book. Library staff will be on hand to sign up families for library cards and deliver fun book talks. Learn how the library can help your child ace this school year!

Boys are traditionally one of our hardest audiences to reach when it comes to reading, leading many to fall behind on their studies. It is no secret how barbershops have become places for the community to meet and do life together. Municipal Court Judge Rodney Adams was once a struggling student, and works to give the youth he finds in his courtroom a second chance at life. He has become one of the library's key partners for the 3B initiative by locating barbers committed to mentoring and encouraging reading and learning.

Placing fun and relatable books in the hands of Irving's youth can create a love of reading which will put them on the path of success. Now is the time to bring the kids, especially boys, to the barber and let them be among the first to select items from our 3B baskets which will feature graphic novels and action-packed books. The books can be read at the shop or taken home to enjoy again and again. This is just the beginning as barbershops all across the city begin displaying their own 3B baskets.  Be on the look out for more 3B launch parties in the coming weeks!
