The Irving Police Department was recently recognized by the Families4Change organization for our continued success in effectively delivering the Family Solutions Program (FSP) over a 10-year period of time.

The Family Solutions Program is the family-based First Offender Program offered to youthful offenders as an alternative to pursuing criminal charges in the Juvenile Court System. The Families4Change organization completed a statistical analysis of the Family Solutions Program delivered by the Irving Police Department during that nine-year period. They found that for the 293 families receiving this service, the recidivism rate for those juveniles completing the program was 13 percent, while juveniles not receiving the service was 50 percent.

Statistical significance was found between the inception and completion of FSP for parent-child communication improvement, child well-being (reported by the youth), family functioning, and lower parent stress (reported by parents). Parent stress in research correlates with child abuse and neglect; thus, FSP may decrease the probability of child abuse and neglect for families who complete FSP.

The Irving Police Department remains committed to restorative justice programming, keeping youthful offenders out of the justice system and providing opportunities for future success.
