Bee a Hero!

Bee gathers pollen from white flower.

According to a survey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, honey bee colonies have decreased by almost half, from 5 million in the 1940s to 2.66 million today.

Here are a few ways that residents can help promote healthy bee populations, as well as other pollinators:

  • Include blooming plants in the landscaping every season.
  • Plant native species.
  • Use less chemicals in the yard.
  • Do not disturb native wildflowers.
  • Provide a water source for bees.
  • Call a local beekeeper if a swarm of bees is seen.
  • Tell friends and family about the plight of bee populations. Encourage them to support pollinators through sustainable gardening.
  • Provide habitats, “Bee Condos,” for solitary bees, which can be purchased or made as a DIY project.
