Stay Weather Aware: Monitor local weather on TV and social media, listen to a weather radio

The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents to stay weather aware.

In the event of a severe weather situation, the city will activate its outdoor warning system to notify residents who are outdoors to immediately seek shelter inside. The system’s sirens are not designed to be heard indoors, although residents may hear them in their home if they live in the close proximity of one.

Irving’s outdoor warning system is activated when:

  • A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).
  • Tornado or funnel cloud reported by reliable source, like the NWS.
  • Continued periods of strong winds of 70 mph or more.
  • Reports of hail more than 1.5 inches in diameter.

During a severe weather event, individuals should stay home, if possible, and monitor local weather alerts and warnings on TV or social media. Additionally, to receive notifications indoors, residents are encouraged to use a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather alert radio.
