Parks and Trail Tips for Pet Owners

A Hispanic family walks their leashed dog on a park path.

Now that spring is here, many residents will take their four-legged friend to the park and on the trails. Irving’s Parks and Recreation Department encourages pet owners to follow these tips when visiting a city park or trail.

Pick Up Pet Waste

Pet owners should be mindful of other visitors and pick up their pet’s waste at a city park or trail. Not only is leaving pet waste on the ground against City ordinance, it also can increase the risk to public health by allowing harmful pathogens to wash into drainage ways and eventually into the Trinity River.

The City of Irving provides pet waste bags at most park properties. Irving Parks and Recreation encourages residents to do their part to keep Irving parks clean.

Pets Should Be Leashed

Pets are required to be properly and safely restrained at all times when visiting a park or trail, unless inside the city’s dog park. According to City ordinance, it is against the law to allow animals to run free or unrestrained within city limits. Dog owners must use a fitted leash with a collar or harness.
