Do you provide school supplies to kids?: The Irving Fire Department, in conjunction with the Mayor and several Irving organizations conduct a school supply drive every summer to provide supplies to the most needed children in Irving ISD for the beginning of each school year. For more information on this program, click here. If your child is in need of school supplies, please contact your child’s school counselor.

1. Why does a fire truck come when I call for an ambulance?: All fire apparatus are ALS (Advanced Life Support) equipped and carry at least one EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) or Paramedic to respond to all minor and major medical calls. At times, all ten ambulances may be busy with other medical calls or may be too far to respond within the standard five-minute response time and therefore a fire engine or fire truck is also dispatched to respond.

2. Why are fire trucks used to block lanes on the highway when there is an emergency?: This is for everyone's safety. By blocking the lanes, all involved assisting are able to work more diligently to clear the incident and provide assistance quicker.

3. How do I report a leaking or broken fire hydrant?: If it is a public fire hydrant, please call Water Utilities at (972) 721-2261. If it is a private fire hydrant, the property owner is responsible for all repairs. It is advised that they contact a plumber.

4. Can I schedule a visit to the fire station or can the fire department come visit us?: Yes, please fill out a form online or call (972) 721-4687 for scheduling.

5. Does the Fire Department inspect child car seats?: No, but the Irving Police Department does. You may call them at (972) 721-2544 or email them at IPDchildseats@cityofirving.org to schedule an appointment.

7. Can the Fire Department come unlock my car if I leave my keys inside?: The fire department will only come out and unlock your vehicle if there is a child or pet inside the vehicle and the engine is running.

8. Can I do Community Service at a fire station or through the fire department?: We currently do not offer opportunities to complete community service hours through our department. Other city departments do offer this opportunity; you may contact City Hall at (972) 721-2600 to find current openings.

9. Does the Fire Department fill private pools with water?: No we do not.

10. Can the Fire Department come out and change the batteries on my smoke detector?: Yes, if the smoke alarm is too high for the resident to reach and they are disabled or elderly and are not able to climb on a ladder to replace the batteries. This does not apply for rental properties.
