The City of Irving has a significant investment in its residential and commercial water meters.
In order to maintain the accuracy of water used, some water meters are replaced each year if they stop working properly or if they have reached the end of their expected life. Once replaced, the radio-based endpoints must be reinstalled on the meter and configured to provide optimal communication to meter readers that use a combination of network, drive-by and hand-held devices to capture the readings.
The benefits of this type of equipment include advanced data recording of all water consumption on a daily basis, historical consumption data for residents, and leak detection capabilities.
No, most of the meters in the system have already been upgraded or replaced to work with the new system. New equipment will be installed only where there is either an outdated or malfunctioning piece of equipment presently in place.
If for some reason the device(s) in the meter box has to be replaced, a resident’s bill may be higher if an old meter was not reading properly.
Meter boxes are normally located next to the street in the front of a property. If this is not the case, technicians will only need to enter a backyard where a meter box is located.
A typical water meter exchange takes about one hour. Exceptions to this process may require more time or additional work. However, the city will work diligently to ensure inconvenience is minimized.
The contractor’s employees will be wearing City of Irving yellow safety vests, identification badges, and will drive a labeled vehicle indicating they are an approved City of Irving Water Utilities contractor.
Not typically; however, in some cases hand-digging may be required. If digging is required, repairs will be made to restore the original conditions.
