1. Can we put plastic grocery bags, like those used at the checkout to sack our groceries, in our weekly blue recycling bag?

Solid Waste Services does not accept grocery bags in the blue bags for recycling. These shopping bags can be returned to most grocery stores and placed in a container usually located at the entrance of the store.

2. Can we put styrofoam in the blue bag?

No, styrofoam is not recyclable.

3. Can we put produce plastic bags, such as the ones found in a grocery store's produce department, in in our weekly blue bag?

Solid Waste Services does not accept produce, grocery or frozen food bags in the blue bags for recycling.

4. Is it OK to put food waste in the recycling blue bag, or should we wash plastic containers, such as yogurt containers, before putting them in the blue bag?

Food waste cannot be put in the blue bag. It would be preferable for certain containers to be rinsed of the food residue, such as yogurt, beans (because of the grease), mayonnaise or peanut butter. Small amounts of liquids remaining from sodas, water, juice, etc., are not a concern.

5. Can food-contaminated paper or styrofoam plates, napkins and paper towels be recycled?

None of these items are recyclable with Irving's blue bag program. The paperboard tube inside your paper towels can be recycled, however.
