Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad. Dates vary each year because the lunar Islamic calendar follows the phases of the moon.

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month in the United States, chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks on the project were Chinese immigrants.

Eid al-Fitr, the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, marking the end of Ramadan. Many Muslims attend communal prayers, listen to a khutuba (sermon), and give Zakat al-Fitr (charity in the form of food) during Eid al-Fitr. Dates vary each year.

The Lone Star Youth Orchestra concludes its 22nd season on May 12 by presenting The Three B’s: Bach, Brahms, & Burns… sorry Beethoven! The winners of LSYO’s annual Concerto Competition will each be featured playing with the Lone Star Youth Orchestra. First Place winner Mohini Bhave will perform the first movement of Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major, BWV 1042. Second Place winner Iris Song will play the third movement. Works by Johannes Brahms (Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68) and Reynard Burns (“Flying”) round out the hour-long program.

Families look forward to each day's activity on social media (@IrvingLibrary on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). Participants are invited to share ways of exercising self-care by using #IPLSelfCare. Also beginning on May 1 at all library locations, pick up a free corresponding self-care package promoting inner calm. Limit one per family. While supplies last.

Adults ages 50 and older are invited to tune in and join Andrea for this 30-minute toning and stretching workout. This is a great way to improve general conditioning, flexibility, and stamina. We will spend the first portion of class working on strength and endurance, followed by an extended stretching period to increase flexibility and reduce muscle stiffness. Open to 50-up.
