It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad. Dates vary each year because the lunar Islamic calendar follows the phases of the moon.

  2. Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

    May 1, 2021 - May 31, 2021

    May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month in the United States, chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks on the project were Chinese immigrants.

  2. Friends of the Irving Public Library Members-Only Book Sale

    The Friends warehouse is filled with thousands of gently-used donations and seldom-used items from the library's collection. These "members-only" sales are held on the first Wednesdays of every month, except for January, June, and July. Membership to the Friends may be purchased on-site at the warehouse during these sales.

    Attendees must observe social distancing guidelines. Masks and gloves are required. No appointment is necessary. Ages 16 and older.

    Starting May 1, kids are invited to join in a 14-day series of affirmations, activities and ways to promote self-care. Families look forward to each day's activity on social media (@IrvingLibrary on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). Participants are invited to share ways of exercising self-care by using #IPLSelfCare. Also beginning on May 1 at all library locations, pick up a free corresponding self-care package promoting inner calm. Limit one per family. While supplies last.

    Adults ages 50 and older are invited to tune in and join Andrea for this 30-minute toning and stretching workout. This is a great way to improve general conditioning, flexibility, and stamina. We will spend the first portion of class working on strength and endurance, followed by an extended stretching period to increase flexibility and reduce muscle stiffness. Open to 50-up.
